Just about anywhere you turn to, you can just about always hear subjects in hip hop music about: money, drugs, violence, and objectifying women. This is a common thing that people turn to in this music genre to take on a more masculine persona. The "Gangster lifestyle" is also adopted to show people who might be a threat to them, "Hey, I'm tough! You don't want to mess with me." When most of the time they have their posse behind them to make themselves seem bigger than they actually are. Examples of rappers that rap about these topics go on and on, for instance: Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls, Lil Wayne, 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Wiz Khalifa, Ice T, Gucci Mane, Three 6 Mafia, Kanye West, Big Sean, Dr. Dre, Mac Miller, and many more. But are there any hip-hop artists that don't rap about money, drugs, violence, and objectifying women?
Hip-hop and rap artist Lecrae does exactly that. His musical genre predominantly consists of southern hip hop, and has been described as falling under the styles of crunk, gangsta rap, and hardcore hip hop, except he doesn't rap about degrading women and doing drugs. Instead he raps about uplifting subjects of faith and trusting the Lord. Lecrae used to be a part of the gang lifestyle, but after converting to Christianity and turning around his life, he is emerging on a new front for hip hop.
So this shows that one doesn't need to take on a overly masculine front to make it into the hip hop business. You just need a purpose.
