The Uniqueness in Gender

-->
Gender is a unique topic and it represents us all. In-fact it is everywhere in our society today. You can see it in ads all over the world, plus you see it in our children’s toys and in movies, music, and television. In this blog I am going to talk about gender itself and where you can find it, plus how it change popular culture over the years.
The codes of gender are something that is unique and at the same time remarkable. I mean gender is something that we all can relate to and see how it impacts our everyday lives. How can we define gender? For one, when a baby is born we can tell if it has a penis then it must be a boy and a girl will have a vagina, which is one way of putting it. But how can we tell on the inside? For one, it can be in the way that we walk. It is the medium in which we communicate to each other. Plus, we want to make visible in to what seems invisible. You can find it more in the culture of today like advertisements and popular media, which is where masculinity and feminism comes together. Women pose as if they are weak, helpless, and want something. Where men are strong, active, and powerful. It is very rare that you see men pose in a feminism way. Mostly it is in gay men, but you can see it in the Abercrombie & Fitch ads. They want you to think that it is okay to buy and wear a pair of jeans and say that you are not gay, which is one way that you can stay on top of popular fashion. On the flip side, our kids are getting into these so-called codes of gender with a little help from Disney.
Gender roles are in our everyday children’s toys and minds. Disney for example has this imagination that every girl should grow up to be a princess. In reality that is not true. Princesses are not real, unless you are born in the British Royal family, but in our society they are not real. Princesses in fairy tales usually think that if they are good they get an award or something in return. In reality that is not true. For example, I was watching an episode of “Full House” the other day and in this episode all of the gang went to Walt Disney World. Early in the episode Michelle got the change to be a princess for a day and had three wishes. Throughout the episode she became bossy and Stephanie, DJ, and Kimmy didn’t like. So, Michelle decided to run away. After a wail, she missed her family and wished that her family was with her. On an end note, a selfish princess like Michelle wouldn’t get an award because she wasn’t nice and kind, but good princesses do. What I am getting at here is that I think Disney and others are telling our kids to be good and nice to one another. And just maybe you might get an award. It might not be what you think, but it’s good anyway. Remember that sex is what we are born with and gender is what we identify ourselves as.
