I know it has been a little bit since we last talked about the idea of food and popular culture but this thought has recently come to mind. At the end of last year, I was consumed by fast food. I say this because at the end of the year last year, during finals week, I ate McDonald's for almost each meal of the day. I am lucky I didn't gain 20 pounds before summer vacation.
The reason I ate so much McDonald's was because of something we learned about in class during this topic. It was fast and easy. It was the cycle of fast food. I didn't have enough time to make myself a decent and nutritious meal so I decided driving to McDonald's and ordering two snackwraps, fries and a large coke would suffice. That was until Friday of finals week and I actually made it home to Illinois and I got to eat actual food. I didn't realize that I was falling into the cycle of fast food until then. I was too caught up in my busy schedule and finals to worry about the cycle. I believe that is how many others feel when they continuously buy fast food. Until they take a minute to realize how fast food is consuming their money and is convincing them to be part of the cycle they will continue to do this.
Don't get me wrong. I personally think fast food is a great thing for busy schedules. What I do not like about fast food is that there are so many different types that even if you think you are not in the cycle because you are ordering a salad at Panera instead of the big mac you ordered at McDonald's the night before, you are in the cycle. Fast food is fast food. There may be better fast food for you but either way you are ordering something that was not made with the freshest ingredients possible like you would be if you were at home making yourself a meal.
I have a secret love with fast food but I know there are better things out there for me so I have been trying to break up with it recently.
