Reflection on Ellen
Last week we discussed Ellen DeGeneres in class. I was looking forward to talking about Ellen because I absolutely love her and her show. In my opinion Ellen gave being a lesbian a new image, a more accepted image. When people talk about Ellen they talk about how funny she is, AND how she is a lesbian. I feel like Ellen made people look past her sexual orientation. That is something that wasn't common, especially with her generation. I think that apart of why Ellen was able to have people look past her sexual orientation was her first television show. In her show she came out as being a lesbian in a funny, laid back manner. There was a joke of some sort after each homosexual comment that was made and that made it more appealing to the heterosexual community. It was easier to watch since there was comedy built in the show. That brought up the discussion in class on if that is how Ellen wanted to come out, or was that more of how ABC wanted her to? I would still like to think that Ellen is a comical person and that is how she wanted to come out and by coming out that way she has created a great lifestyle and image for herself. She has also made being a homosexual just a little bit easier for others. I really enjoyed discussing Ellens' show in class and how it made her feel empowered to come out. Even though she said that on her television show, its great to see someone do something brave like that. I like seeing a change in the world and I feel like Ellen is really helping with that acceptance and change in one department of our society.
