It's a Hard-Knock Life for Girls (on TV)

I found this video while writing a paper, and I thought it tied into class material all too well.  It discusses the issues that many young girls face while watching television.  It states that only 32% of girls are leads on shows.  It talks about how girls on television shows are instead cast as a side-kick, love interest, or someone who is obsessed with fashion and clothes.  The commercials between the television shows for girls are all about clothing they should wear, instead of featuring a wide range of things that might appeal to both boys and girls.  It is assumed that the girls only care about clothing.

Something else the video touches on is the sad fact that the girls that do happen to make it into children's shows are all skinny, pretty, and white.  It says that there is more diversity in the world, and it seems like a call to action for us as audience members to demand a change in casting.  What I find disappointing about this is that the three girls in the video are skinny, pretty, white, and wearing skirts and other clothes deemed feminine.  If you are going to make a video about changing casting and roles for girls in television, why wouldn't you cast these said girls in your own video.  I think that it was a mistake by the makers of this video to not have more diversity in their cast.  I also really hate at the end when the girls are all having a pillow fight.  Why not end it with these girls doing something productive, or something a little less stereotypical.  Why not have a shot of them playing their favorite sport? Or winning a spelling bee? or anything else that would advance their ideas.
